In Reply To: As a recent McKinsey offeree, I find this line of discussion amusing. Talk of talent drying up at the firm, historically non-selective firms being compared with the M/B/B, etc. Ridiculous - you guys must be kidding yourselves. As a graduate of top tier programs in both medicine and law and a founder of a biotech company, I can only tell you that I'm VERY mediocre compared to my class of McK offerees. You can dog on the firm as much as you'd like to comfort your petty egos, but in my opinion, I think McK is doing well with the available talent pool in the mgmt consulting space, especially on the APD (MD,JD,PhD) side - a recruiting pratice, btw, that McKinsey spearheaded. If there are any signs of McKinsey's decline, they are at most indicative of broad trends affecting the business of mgmt consulting generally, not of deficits specific to the firm.
Message: YOu are absolutely right; McKinsey is not "losing ground" inside the management consulting profession. What has happened, is that management consulting has become a commoditized profession and it no longer attracts "the best and the brightest"; it attracts the good and very good, which is not bad, mind you. It's just that it is no longer as distinctive as in the past. Most universtiy professors and client executives will confirm this! So will "the best and the brightest" in university!
