Why no interview? |

Hey everyone,
I just received an e-mail from McKinsey saying I was not selected for an interview for a summer business analyst position. I'd appreciate anyone's advice on why that is, if possible.
About me:
- junior at the Wharton School of U Penn
- GPA: 3.75
- concentrations: finance and accounting
- have also done well in qualitative classe (marketing classes, etc.)
- SAT (McK asks for this): 1510 (V: 770, M: 740)
- pretty good work experience: worked at a hedge fund last summer and an accounting firm the summer after my freshman year
- decent extracurriculars: tutor underprivileged kids during the week, belong to a few business clubs
- had my resume and cover letter critiqued by Penn's career services office
I haven't heard back from the other consulting firms I applied to yet (BCG, Bain, Monitor), but I'm wondering if I'll also not even get interviewed at those firms.
I have a few thoughts on why I was rejected:
- Perhaps McK is really that selective that my GPA is just not good enough. I'm pretty sure I'm in the top 10% of the Wharton class of 500 people, although a lot of students from Penn's other undergraduate schools apply to consulting as well. Still, McK interviews about 60 Penn students for summer interviews each year.
- Maybe my math SAT is too low?
- This is what I am most concerned with: based on my work experience and concentrations, it may look like I want to do investment banking. So perhaps McK just assumed I applied there as a backup in case I couldn't get a banking job? I explained in my cover letter how I sought more business skills, exposure to diverse industries, etc. as my reasoning for wanting consulting, though. And I attended every McK presentation this year at Penn.
- Lack of leadership? - I've had good work experience and I'm "involved" at school, but I'm not the president or high ranking member of any school club.
Anyway, now I am concerned that I won't get any consulting interviews, and based on my choice of concentrations all that I have a shot at is banking (and I only applied to a few of those jobs anyway).
Advice, anyone?
