In Reply To: I'm not in a hurry to go to B school. I want to make sure I have the right experience that would get me into one of the top schools - and this is what I need advice on!! What kind of a position should I shoot for? I feel like I'm over qualified for an Analyst but dont have enough experience (but ceratinly have the skills and determination) to be a consultant.
Message: One thing I've learned about advice, is that people often advise you to take the path they took. So, with that caveat, I'll clarify my earlier advice about going into "industry." Go work for a big, well respected, brand name company (I like GE). If you do well, that will help you get into B-School, and help you get a top consulting offer. The problem with being at a small firm, is the lack of brand recognition. Ray Kane mentioned that there are a number of people at Wharton who worked for small firms. That may be the case at Wharton, but that's not what I observed at HBS. The "no name" people in my class all came from start-ups, non profits, and obscure international companies. But, let me ask you this question, when people leave you firm, where do they go? Good B-Schools? To work for real companies? That will help clarify the path you are on if you stay. If the people who were analysts before you all went to top school, I'd say stay where you are, and follow their path. If not, I'd say go do something else that will get you into a good school.
