In Reply To: I think it depends upon how you approach it. For example, I read that HBS grads traditionally have a lot of leverage/advantage with McKinsey compared top other top MBA grads. Is it unethical for a HBS grad to fully squeeze out his network grid when applying for a McKinsey role or for other professional opportunities? Obviously, one cannot expect a job simply because his/her father is the President of the country. However, leveraging one's family network seemed to have happened before, i.e., Ms Clinton getting associate role instead of BA.
Message: I am not speaking about anything unethical, but we all know that it is about who you know. It obviously does not hurt when someone of importance gives one an honest recommendation. For example, John X.'s family is very close to their state senator and the senator is very familiar with John X.'s capabilities and potential. John X. applies to work somewhere in the same state or applies out-of-state to HBS, et. al. Surely, the senator's letter of recommendation would help in either case.
