Hi, is it true that Mckinsey rarely hires outside candidates for their partner track? I have strong exp in the strategy side of things (7+ yrs post MBA with F20 company) and looking to see if I would be attractive to Mckinsey.
Secondly, what sort of ranges in terms of pay and bonus can I expect at these levels.
I am going to toss my resume into the ring this week...your inputs will help as well. Thanks in advance! |

There is a famous story, perhaps apocryphal, about a CEO who was hired into the Firm (was it in the 70s or 80s, I can't say) as an associate. That was his first study. On his second study he was promoted to an EM. For his third study they made him an SEM and then after the appropriate nomination and vetting period, he became finally became a partner. There probably isn't a CEO alive who would put up with that sort of crap today.
McKinsey did not relax their policy about not hiring into partner-level positions until the late-90s. I can name the name of the first outside-in partner to be hired. There are several running around the NE complex as we speak. In general, and to the best of my knowledge, new partners are compensated in the $500k - $1mm range -- depending on prior experience of course. Let's face it, and especially at the higher levels, McKinsey IS like a secret society. Given that, and having known several of these guys I can report that they find the culture byzantine in the extreme. The tacit knowledge that allows anyone to get things done quickly and effectively in companies they've been with for years and/or have grown up with simply does not exist in any new hire. At the partner level, this is frankly a huge barrier.
