There's no easy answer to the question of "where do people go."
Most folks who leave at the EM level tend to go into "industry," though some folks go into PE (sometimes VC, more often LBO).
Some people even go off and start their own companies, which I think is what most of us would aspire to, if we weren't all risk averse by nature.
The kinds of "industry" jobs people get are all over the map, in terms of industry, size of company, type of job, etc... In general, I think most folks get staff jobs. The really good people get operating roles.
I think a lot has to do with the experience/achievements one has prior to McK. Not all McK EM's are the same. If you have worked for a real company in a leadership position before B-School, for example, you stand a good shot at getting a decent operating role. If you only have consulting work experience, you need to prove yourself as a staff guy, before you get the keys to the car.
As for the PE roles, I'm more familiar with the LBO shops. Some people with previous finance experience might get join on the deal side. From what I've seen, people exiting consulting firms tend to join the "portfolio groups." These are the internal consulting-type groups that play a very active role in increasing the value of the asset that the deal guys acquired. |
