It appears clearly from all the posts on this thread that McKinsey has lost its "mystique" (remember the headline of the Fortune 500 cover with Fred Gluck and a few associates, on the staircase of the NYC office?).
The work is less "distinctive",
the impact on the performance of the clients is decreasing,
the "quality" of the associates and, therefore, partners, is not improving (mild understatement),
there are no new "superstar alumni" to replace Lou Gerstner in the collective mythology,
BUT.....
The AA this year is exceptional (only once was it higher)!
How can the "top management at McKinsey" be made aware of the fact the firm it is heading in losing ground? Or is it that no one really cares about the long-term and the only thing partners are really interested in is the total compensation of this year (wiht next year looking far away and "uncertain", since they can be counselled out at any evaluation)?
How about starting a new thread about "a call to action to McKinsey's senior leadership"? How about generating ideas to fix the problems that are now well acknowledged on this site?

I think this is part and parcel of a number of things:
1. The Firm's sheer size prevents it from having every study be an industry-shaping event
2. The business cycle seems to be more focused on consolidation and operations vs. innovation at the moment (although the trend is shifting)
3. (Gotta have 3) There continue to be a wide array of options for top MBAs and APDs outside of consulting
I only worry about 3. The Firm is not very good at proactive recruiting and I think we miss many good candidates because we don't play the same hardball as Bain/BCG/GE/MSFT/Google/etc.
BTW, I think the answer is not to change anything, but to me a bit more proactive when recruiting high potential candidates and to be open to the top 1-2% from non-traditional schools.
