The previous post would not be 100% accruate for the UK and Germany:
- UK would be closer to the US situation, so JA might actually be a little different that BA
- Sutdies in Germany are typically very long and JAs are not required to do an MBA as much as the the JAs from other offices... DIrect-to-Associate promotion in GErmany is therefore more frequent. (I have no hard data on this.)

Hi Stan,
my understanding of the way it works in Germany is as follows. The two primary entry routes are "Fellow" and "Associate". There is now a third one which is the BA equivalent.
As a Fellow (called "Fellow Associate", later "Fellow Senior Associate"), you're pre-MBA/pre-PhD (so I guess equivalent to JA?), work for 2 years and then get a year off for a further degree... be it MBA, PhD or sth else. So it doesn't need to be an MBA, but a second degree (whatever it may be) is the norm.
The alternative is to start directly as an Associate, which one can do with either an MBA or a PhD.
There is now a BA equivalent in Germany as well, which is aimed at Bachelor students. I don't know the details of this route though.
