In Reply To: First, thank you both for responding. To clarify, I was told that they didn't think I showed enough independence professionally, although I cleared the bar for everything they were looking for. I'm a grad student in micro, and in my program it's typical for students' projects to be primarily driven by their boss. He tells you what to do, you do it. I initially had a project like that, but was extremely interested in a project I had thought up myself, and so I convinced my boss to let me pursue it instead. As a result, I've worked almost entirely on my own throughout school, which has delayed publication significantly, since I don't have the luxury of being heavily directed by my boss (and don't really like working that way anyway). Obviously there is no possible way for my interviewers to know about my situation, and since I didn't dream it would ever be an issue, I didn't bring it up. So the suggestion was that I become more independent; but since I'm already EXTREMELY independent, I would like to reapply sooner rather than later, with clarification as to why it's taken awhile to publish. I also thought prior performance only mattered through the resume screen, so I didn't bother sending an updated CV when I submitted my first two papers (which are still in review). Please let me know if there's something useful I've omitted.
Message: It seems very odd to me that they would put you through three rounds of interviews only to ding you in the final round for not having a good publication record. (In micro-what by the way? Microeconomics? Microbiology? Not that it really matters, just curious...) I have to say I am baffled. I've never come across a situation like this. Sorry I can't provide any more helpful comments!
