Message: As someone about to enter an MBA program while the opportunities of the "New Industrial Revolution" of the Internet pummels down our dorm-room doors, I am wondering if some of you could help me decide between a post-MBA brand mgmt job in classical consumer products versus in the Internet/high tech industry. 1. What is meant by, "High technology marketing is just emerging from the shadows of the sales department." What kind of implications would that have for the organizational structure or people in marketing at a high tech organization? 2. What is the value of getting a solid foundation in marketing from a more traditional packaged goods company and transferring that knowledge to the more cutting edge technology industry? Are the industries so inherently different that there is little to carry over? 3. Aside from product line maturity and the bureaucracy of a larger organization to deal with, what other differences in day-to-day job responsibility are there between the two areas? Given that I probably won't try something entrepreneurial right out of bschool, I guess I am trying to determine which opportunity is a better stepping stone toward starting my own company someday. General mgmt, profit and loss responsibility, solid training, good mentors. Or some more ambiguity and speed, sharp thinking and nimble footedness. Comments and personal observations much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
