I would like to get your opinions regarding my situation. I am currently four years out of school and I'm in my third year of corporate finance with a southern regional boutique. I specialize in debt capital markets advisory (ie: high-yield origination and private placements) for middle market clients.
Over the three years I have climbed up the ladder quickly with regard to title (currently an VP although that means nothing) and responsibility (I am heavily involved in relationship management). As one of only four bankers, I basically helped to grow a book of business from the ground up. I have considerable experience participating in every aspect of the transaction from market research and advising clients, to actually pitching the credits to institutional investors.
Overall I love my job. Although I don't work for a glamourous bulge firm the autonomy and experience I have been given has been wonderful and unique.
However, I am very unhappy about the fact that I live in the South. I can't stand southern culture. I am originally form the Northeast (CT) and would like to find a good position with prospects in NYC.
My question is this...Do I need an MBA to obtain a mid-level (VP) position with a brand name firm in the Northeast? Currently I don't have one. Although I considered applying for the top schools, I don't want to have to take a job out of school being somebody's associate slave at a giant firm (with less pay no doubt).
I am a CFA charterholder, although that doesn't carry much weight in IBD.
Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts. What would you do in my position? Go to grad school and start over? Or do I have a chance to find a gainful opportunity with my background?
Thanks.
