1. Go ahead and target (i.e write to) the firms individually. They all will look at outstanding candidates who are out of the mainstream schools. The key is deciding if you are outstanding. If you lack stellar grades and testscores, be realistic about your chances given the odds and the rest of the talent pool. So go ahead and apply to the top guys but also, go a bit further down the food chain.
2. Go ahead and use Georgia State facilities as they are. I know that you won't have Goldman coming calling, but you do have an office, there is someone manning it. Yeah, it may not be swanky like at Harvard, but it is a resource. Go nose around. Get some attention. Use it for all it's worth.
3. Talk to the larger firms and see if there are any alumni from GA state working there. Yeah, State is not the most presitgious, but in a big firm, you never know. Plus there may be people who went undergrad or partway to State.
4. Target local offices, since you can actually go in person to knock on the door. They may sneer, but they won't kill you. And it will show balls.
5. If you are a minority or woman, make sure that people realize that (gracefully). It will not hurt you and may help you in the competition.

Little personal advice: don't be sensative to flames or to "degrading advice". Some of the best advice can be delivered with a barb. AS you get older, you will be a little less sensative about this stuff...and be able to weed out the info from the tone. |

Good personal advice. For example, if I say "Its not 'sensative' but 'sensitive' you retard" you shouldn't take it personally. (sure hope my spell checker worked)
