not everyone does banking or consulting after graduation, and they still manage to get into great b-schools. what other well paying, interesting job opps. are the besides IB and MC? |

This is indeed a good question, and it's one that most MBAs in my experience have a lot of trouble answering. Here are some ideas (I won't go into lengthy descriptions):
--Economic/litigation consulting. Very different types of problems from management consulting, but seems like great experience at the BA level. The pace is much slower than in MC or IB, but salary is good and there's very little travel.
--Internal consulting, especially in FS. Companies like B of A and AmEx seem to have beefed up their internal consulting arms quite a bit recently.
--Product or brand management, as in high tech (Intel or Sun) or CPG (P&G, Kraft). Really wide range of jobs.
--What about the non-banking jobs at an IB? Treasury, operations, and finance are decent paying jobs without the hours of IB, and you get the name on your resume.
If your goal is a solid business school, I will boldly suggest that nearly ANY 1-2 business-related job for 3-4 years where you were a high achiever and managed teams of 4-6 at some point will work for you, as long as you can write about and speak to the experiences effectively.
Good luck.
