That was a pretty one sided post. To defend the small firm:
* Large firms have too many layers. If you are an entry-level analyst, who do you think is going to get the most interesting work - you or the three MBAs on your team?
* A small firm that is growing is one of the best places to get high level of responsibiliites early in your career. As the company grows, firms need to develop their existing staff faster so that they can help train the next round of hires.
* Choose small firms that have a proven track record. Two things to look for are either longevity (the associates can and want to stay for three or more years) or for placements into top b-schools.
* Watch out for the crazy boss. In small firms, personalities matter a whole lot. There are way too many firms where the organization is either a "cult of personality" around the president, or such a jerk that he/she couldn't work for anyone else.
