In Reply To: The Top Consulting Firms recruit at my school in Canada for the Toronto Office. However, I would much rather work in the New York Office. How much do you think it hurts my chances if I request the New York Office in the Cover Letter I submit to Career Services? The Toronto people said that they would communicate with the New York Office about such instances and decide which office would handle us. But how less likely do you think I am to be hired by the office for which they are not specifically recruiting at my school Also, does anyone have any suggestions on handling questions about why I would rather go to NYC (without insulting the Toronto people or telling them the truth: That NYC is just a much better city!)? Thank you very much for your advice.
Message: Monkey, I don't think it would hurt your chances too much. However, let me emphasize that a consulting job in a top-tier firm is hard to come by these days in any city. Perhaps a better approach would be to state your interest in NYC but to also emphasize your flexibility and that to work for a firm as outstanding as X, you'll work anywhere in north america, yada yada yada... If you are set on pushing for NYC, do some research [or ask] where different offices specialize in functional areas or industries. That way, you could emphasize your interest in financial services (which hopefully ties to your resume!) and ask for a second office interview in NYC.
