I've heard people from Bain tell me that Bain has the "Bain way" of doing things and their distinct culture is what attracts a lot of people to their company. But I don't understand (because I admit, I don't know much about management consulting companies other than what's on the vault and webfeet's website) why Bain is so different than other companies, and as importantly, what is so different about the Bain culture. Why are so many people attracted to this company rather than BCG or Mckinsey, or Mercer? What types of people fit in at Bain and what type do not, and how does Bain differ from other top management/strategy consulting companies.

I really don't think there's as big a difference as you think, but most people I've seen go to Bain tend to be "sparky"--lots of energy and really forthright about offering opinions. From what I've seen, more book-ish types somehow wind up in generalist places like BCG or Monitor, or quirky boutiques like SDG.
By the way, I would offer that it's not true that "so many people [are] attracted to this company" over the others. Truth of the matter is, take any MBA program, EVERY consultant wannabe applies to MBB no matter what your perception is of those firms, and only a select few get into one or more and can choose along the lines you refer to.
