First, I was a consultant for about four years before returning to school. I don't think you'll have a problem going back, particularly if you have had a relatively successful IT career. Although, I might suggest that you try something else first (e.g. go to a medical software company -- with your background, you'd probably be very valuable).
Beyond that, I hate to sound like an advertisement, but what about getting an MBA? You would probably be a really good candidate. What better "failure" story than the one you have? I think that if you went to any "top" (whatever that means) MBA program, you could write your ticket.
A lot of people would want to be in your position right now. I would make sure you shoot for "name brand." If you have good undergrad grades, I would consider BCG and McKinsey. They like non-traditional smart folks, and your interest in medicine and IT would probably fit nicely with their growing IT practices.
Good luck! |

Hello,
I'm in a similar situation as the first poster, in that I am a current med student and former management consultant (2yrs) who is looking to leave school and return to consulting.
I've started sending out resumes to a few places, but I'm not getting as much interest as I expected. My undergrad and med school are both in the top 3, and I worked for a high value added management consulting firm.
My evaluations at my former firm were stellar, and I would return if not for a bad vibe I got while I was there.
Could recruiters be turned off by the med school experience? Should I leave it off my resume? Would doing so be ethically questionable in any way?
Is it difficult to be hired off the normal consulting recruiting cycle? How much easier is it to get an interview if the resume is delivered via a contact at the firm?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.
