In Reply To: All, As a newbie to this board, I would welcome all constructive comments for my questions. I have noticed that it seems like that many of the people's backgrounds here are from prestigous top tier business schools? Is there anyone that went to a "normal" business school (i.e. NOT top-tier) business school out there. I actually worked while I got my MBA and went to the University of Phoenix, Cleveland Campus. My BA was in Psychology from an average state school in Ohio. I graduated a year ago and I am looking to get into either management or web consulting considering I had an ebusiness concentration in my MBA program. I have 3+ years in the manufacturing, internet advertising, and consulting industries with a contract assignment at Ernst and Young. My questions are the following: -how should I custom tailor my resume for the best results? -is consulting a bad industry to get into right now? I have heard it is really bad from the economy. -how does someone who is not entry level but does not have a lot of experience position themself? -is there a "hidden job market" where I should look? -does anyone know of anyone hiring right now? I am working as a contractor purchasing IT hardware and software right now in the midwest but I am open to relocaction and want a career oriented position. Thanks, Jon
Message: Jon, I just finished a job search myself and understand how overwhelming the process can seem at first. Networking with alumni from my B-school was very effective in helping me shape my ideas about what I really wanted to do...and getting my resume at the top of the pile. I would recommend that you get onto the alumni databases from your "normal" MBA alma mater and begin researching where other alumni are. If they are in consulting, or web consulting, write them a very focused email requesting a 30 minute time slot telling them you are a fellow grad "in transition" and that you would like to hear about their experiences. Research the companies they work for and scan their job openings. Do NOT downplay your experiences or degree...right now you are oooozing a lack of self confidence. Think of all your accomplishments and what skills from past assignments are a good fit with consulting (client service, analytics, etc.) If it seems appropriate and your are hitting it off with the contact, inquire about the specific opportunities you saw on their website or ask about sending along your resume in case anything comes up. Write thank you notes and follow up with good contacts in the future. Often you have to lay many stones before an interview comes your way, but you learn much along the journey. You need to get out there and reach conclusions on your own about the market. Talk to people! Also, in terms of the state of consulting...you are right, many firms are cutting back on hiring, but many are still hiring. You just sound like a guy who hasn't done that much homework yet - don't fall prey to CareerKeys Yet...put in a good effort of your own first...
