I'm a Sr. Manager at a top consulting firm and am considering some solid independent consulting opportunities at the moment. Already have a potential client lined up and am looking to structure a nice contract. Does anyone have any advice on what things to take into account when structuring an independent consulting contract with fees, hourly bill rates, costs incurred of going inpdependent, incorporating, benefits, pto, overhead, etc.? I'm obviously looking to set up something sweeter than what I currently have at the firm I'm with. So, I figure I need to take into account that my contract should cover total comp and costs as well as a nice profit. I've heard not to underestimate costs such as benefits and other overhead. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks. |

You may have lower support in terms of Powerpoint production from what you are used to. If you can make the amount cover use of a graphics freelancer, that would be helpful. (Should be able to locate one by talking to graphics assistants at your current firm.) Or if you can structure it into the contract as an expense. Also, see if you can get specific secretarial assistance at your client site. Hopefully from your specific client's assistant as the person hiring you is most interested in you succeeding. If you work it right, you may be able to do sseveral projects for the same client. Probably your best shot is to charge a large salary and than take some vacations. If that lifestyle fits, you, you can probably net the same amopunt of pay and spend less time on the job. But if you go crazy without constant emplyment, it may not fit you so well as staying at a big company.
