I'm a second year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, studying philosophy. I was planning to transfer into Ivey, the top undergraduate Canadian b-school (where you are supposed to do your first two years in a non-business subject), in the fall.
However, I've also been admitted to Harvard undergrad as a transfer, where I would do philosophy (or maybe philosophy with a minor in economics.)
I've heard that there is a major bias against non-business, non-engineering types in Canada compared to the US. How difficult would it be to get into an analyst position in a Toronto office of a majory strategy firm (McKinsey/Bain/BCG) with this degree? Would the Harvard name trump the impractical concentration? (I have extremely strong quantitative skills, which I can show with test scores and high performance in a few math/finance/econ classes.)
How would recruiting for Canadian offices work? Would I be at a huge disadvantage if I couldn't fly up to Toronto for pre-recruiting social events? How hard is it to get a resume through to interviews without that proximity and contact?
Thank you all for your help.
