Difference between doing 3-5 years as a consultant out of college versus industry experience?
-What are the advantages of working in PWC in their GRMS practice versus a rotational program within GE, Time Warner and vice versa. The end goal is to get into MBA school and work for a top strategy firm afterwards. |

If your medium term end-goal is to work for a top (business) strategy firm, then you need to start by honing fundamental skillsets needed in consulting: eg. how to frame problems, formulate solutions based on incomplete information, analytical ability to analyze raw data and communicate emerging findings and issues, etc.
Having said that, as a newbie, assuming the consultancy firm vs the industry firm are both brand names, it will be up to you to make the difference, despite which firm. The key is to find a mentor within the company to teach you the ropes. Also as a point of reference, the type of rotational program at GE and Time Warner will of course make a difference ?? ie. what types of experiences do you think you will obtain? As for GRMS, most of the work will be operational / risk oriented ?? ie. operations oriented as opposed to business strategy.
However, when you go for an MBA or a position at a Strat firm, you will need to demonstrate your early successes at whatever firm you are with. They will more focus on signs of increasing responsibility, stellar performance and exceptional references.
Basically at an early stage of your career, your choice should be based on which firm has the most interesting work and equally important ?? find out who you will be working for and get an idea about the people you will be working with. The key is to figure out which opportunity has the best people that you can learn from and culture that fits your style.
