In Reply To: Here is one data point... I was a 2001 Top-5 MBA grad as well. I work for a boutique strategy firm and have many friends in the larger firms. Firms are starting to get visibility on the year's outlook and all around, the sector is still quite slow. I am hearing that operations or cash management work is growing a little at this point (this is the sort of work we're selling at the moment), but the "pure" strategy stuff is not good right now and doesn't seem to look like it will pick up for the next year or so. That said, I have seen that firms are interviewing for 1st-year MBA positions only, and I know this through friends who are interviewing. McKinsey and Accenture (check with the NY recruiter on this one) come to mind. Are they actually hiring? Hard to say. I would get in touch with your contacts there. Be warned that such firms will treat you like an MBA 2003, not MBA 2001 (one of my 2001 grad buddies from a Top-5 MBA program is in this process at McKinsey now). So your two years since then will not be rewarded directly. Another thought...remember that the consulting market is very, very fragmented beyond the largest 20 firms or so. I think a number of the tiny guys (5-10 employees) out there are looking for contractors to bring on when they sell projects. If you can find a tiny firm started by former employees of "mainstream" consulting firms and do some projects with them for peanuts, you might have a good experience and something solid to write on your resume. Hope that helps a little--as I said, not good, but there's hope. Good luck with things...other thoughts from the gallery?
Message: This is for bluechicago, I am looking to intern this summer in some of the boutique consulting firms. Being in a West coast school, we do not have many contacts in the East coast smaller consulting firms. Since you are in one of them, could you tell me about the best way to 'reach' these firms and what is the kind of profile they would be interested in for an internship. Your thoughts would be valuable. Please mail me st uscintern_2003@yahoo.com Many thanks!
