In Reply To: Well Pal, Two things: (1) More and more PhD holders might be promoted to partner at McK and BCG, a statement for which you provide no evidence, and I'm not sure it is true. But let's say it is. This doesn't mean that they are hiring PhD's in larger numbers. It only means that IF you were to pass their recruiting screen, you have a good chance of doing well. But my guess is that most PhDs applying to such places get the unceremonious boot. (2) The idea of anybody doing a PhD in EE or Math so they can get a job at McK is so fundamentally stupid that even the recruiters at McK and BCG will see through this and dispense with this person in short order. Cheers, Yabai PS No "Top" institution will grant you a PhD in ANYTHING in three years. And if you do manage to get one, you are so gifted in your field that you'd might as well remain in it, since your chances of being rich and famous are higher in your field than at McK.
Message: I agree with your take that it is silly to "go get a Ph.D. to go to McK". That said, I got one and went to McK. (I didn't set out with that purpose though.) And I was able to do a tech Ph.D. at a top university in 3 years. (You just have to be aggressive and watch out for your interests...and make sure you don't work with a dick advisor. And don't listen to people who tell you "you can't do that."
