Remember that the goal of the case interview is to show the recruiter that you can think through a business problem in a logical way. Notetaking is absolutely expected as much as you can without distracting yourself and without recording frivolous detail.
When I was recruited, most of my interviews resulted in a half-page of notes, calculations, and even an occasional P&L. Without taking notes, showing your math, and thinking out loud, it's hard to show the logic behind your responses. |

You need to take notes. And you need to write down a framework and go through it (use "the pause").
I've seen people criticized for not using the paper enough.
One small issue, if you have bad handwriting or tend to be a little more "internal" with your structure, try practicising a little bit to make sure that you look structured. The interviewer WILL try to read upside down and follow what you are doing on the pad.
