I think Wharton interviews over half of the applicants so I wouldn't use that to prove much. I also doubt that a couple of years of work experience in consulting will be helpful, especially considering you'll probably be starting at some sort of research associate/business analyst level.
Find out why you got rejected. For example, go ask Wharton what you were missing. I doubt they will recommend you to get consulting experience and reapply. It might have been your goals, essays, interview, etc. |

Thank you for your suggestions. Wharton will give feedback no sooner than this May. But definitely I will call them and find out why.
Work experience is a very important, if not the most important, part for an applicant's candidacy. This is why I think my five years work experience in China hurt my application and a consulting career, even as a business analyst, will help. The idea situation for me is to be a business analyst but still have chances to get involved in different phases and aspects of business.
