When does experience outweigh gpa? |

Getting that first interview... |

Anyone familiar with the selection/recruiting process please help me out. I'm a junior applying for summer associate internships at various firms and go to a solid southern california school (it's targeted by recruiters during booms and neglected during recessions). Bain is the only firm actively recruiting on campus right now. My aim is to get interviews but my GPA hovers just above 3.5. I realize this isn't a very "competitive" gpa, but I was wondering if work experience can help compensate my lower gpa and get me interviews?
I'm currently spending the year studying in Europe, and my most notable internship was being an economic advisor to the prime minister of a SE Asian country (how I got the job is a long story)...I used a lot of basic problem solving frameworks during my internship and did a reasonably good job under the circumstances(in my opinion).
So do I have a shot at getting interviews despite the gpa? I'm hoping my global education and work experience will give me the chance to do the case study. What are the deciding factors that recruiters look at in summer candidates when granting interviews?
Any insight is appreciated
