Hi,
I went to a public institution (top-20) and got a 3.1 in mechanical engineering. Got a 690 GMAT and have worked for 3 years in a San Francisco Tech Firm. I will go get an MBA at a 2nd tier public school and will do well I believe. Is my GPA going to stop me from getting interviews at Consulting firms when I graduate in 2006? How about the top Strat firms? Thanks for your advice all!
Best Regards |

A top firm will be more interested in a bad grade from a top school than a good grade from a 2nd tier school. Consulting is all about the name. If you are interviewing with alumni of top schools, they will not hire you, because to so do would devalue their own cherished elite status. Why pay all that money for Harvard, they think, if anyone can get hired here? Also, in pitches, it is very important that the consultants have more prestigious education than the marks, otherwise the mark will realize he can just hire regular people to do a consultant's job. Yes, it's shallow, but that's the truth about the way the industry works. If you want in, there's no alternative but an MBA from a top 10 school, top 20 at a stretch.
