Hi everyone,
I am a college student who is interested in pursuing a career in consulting. I was wondering what are some of the key factors that successful consultants possess. Also, what is the best way to break into this field?
Thank you. |

Best way to break into consulting is, far-and-away, on-campus recruiting. This may seem obvious, but an internship with any recognizable firm should help you breeze into full-time first rounds. If you can't get a consulting internship, you should try one that incorporates a consultant's functional toolbox (market research, financial analysis, project-orientation, presentation development - plus whatever else may fit in your area of consulting interest (strategy, IT, Ops, HR...)
Also, a lot of undergrads seem to be joining university consulting groups / clubs and working on mock engagements. Such experience help, a little, in getting interviews. More importantly, you have a chance to explore the fit of this career choice.
Most strategy consultants share common baseline attributes. I suggest you look at the vault or wetfeet guides for more information - it's pretty clear cut.
