In Reply To: I recently had a second-round interview with one of the top 3 management/strategy consulting firms. I was asked about my age (I'm slightly older than the average applicant), and some of the employees there made comments about my height, weight and hairline (I'm short, fat and balding). What should I do about this? I know the age thing is definitely illegal, but I'm not sure about the other stuff. I thought about demanding an offer or I would talk to a lawyer and the EEOC, but this seems like blackmail. Any ideas anyone? And don't tell me this kind of discrimination is a fact of life at consulting firms.....I intend to do something about this, I just don't know what yet.
Message: Apparently the firm I interviewed with is not only not in the "top 3" (according to Vault) but is not even in the top 10, although it did make the Vault Guide's top 50 list. I guess they oversold themselves and I don't know much about consulting. This was pointed out to me by a newly-minted lawyer at the EEOC who graduated from a very prestigious law school. Guess he wanted to do consulting but was rejected. Seems kind of bitter about it. Anyway, the EEOC is swamped with complaints like this and will only take action if it is "high-profile", which apparently this firm is not. This leaves a civil suit as my only option, and as the recovery would not be that large and I have had an offer from a small, friendly botique firm, I am content to let the matter lie. To Nogivup, I did not go onto this board to look for sympathy, but for practical advice about a problem that I had. I have my girlfriend and my dog for sympathy, I do not need it from strangers. To the I-banker who thinks I am lying, no, I am actually telling the truth, but I am sure there are people who exaggerate. Anyway, good luck to everyone who had helpful words for me. I'd like to forget that this incident happened and I won't be commenting on this again.
