Vault's "surving the first team assignment guide" contains the oft-repeated advise to ask a lot of questions during the first assignment.

Unfortunately, this isn't always the best advice. There is a right way and a wrong way to ask these questions. For instance, if the client has an acronymn like "DOP," one could ask one of these three questions:
Good: "Joe Client keeps talking about DOP sales. Do you know what 'DOP' stands for?"
Better: "Do you know where I can find a list of client acronymns? I need to find out what Joe means by 'DOP sales'"
Best: "Do we have access to the client intranet? I would like to learn more about some of the sales terms that Joe used in our meeting today."
The questions accomplish the same result, but the "best" question shows that one has actually thought about the question and possible solutions in a proactive way. It also shows that you want to learn, since accessing the client intranet can be useful for other client matters, such as using the corporate directory and checking today's menu at the cafeteria. The period in which one can ask lots of questions is only a couple of months, so it makes sense to learn to ask questions in a leveraged way.
