In Reply To: better to be over-dressed than under-dressed. yeah, sure the interviewer might seem more casual (in dress and in attitude), but that doesn't mean you should look or even sound like them. Wear the tie, the dress shirt, everything. even the jacket. What could it hurt? I once interviewed a guy who came well prepared to the interview (for entry-level consulting), but he came without a tie and a jacket and I immediately knocked him for it, and it wasn't that the tie was a requirement, but before we even started, my first impression was that he lacked professionalism based on his casual attitude in dress attire.
Message: A lot of times firms are looking for fit. They want to see that the person can loosen up a bit and be themselves. If they say "business casual" and you walk in wearing a suit, tie, and the whole 9 you are going to come across as uptight. I would go with a nice button down dress shirt, either blue or white, gray slacks and maybe a sport coat. Definitely not a suit and tie though. BTW, what firm are you interviewing with? That might also have some bearing on the decision.
