In Reply To: my experience is with strategy consulting, not IT implementation. My last project I spoke to people in manufacturing, sales, marketing, finance, logistics, and spoke to several customers. In 6 months I got a broader view of a Fortune 500 company than any other young entry level people in that company. And each project I am on covers a different topic. So after a few engagements I get a broad variety of experiences in a variety of industries. One project can be in supply chain, another on a division turnaround, a third on marketing strategy for a new product, a fourth a overall portfolio strategy. each project is different for sure. As far as small businesses are concerned what you say makes sense, my comments were directed at comparing strategy consulting to being a corporate cog. I would say consulting is a much more useful, pragmatic, learning experience by a long shot.
Message: This is a good point. I think generalist consulting suits well those people who have steel-trap minds, who work well cross-functionally, and who ultimately want to run a business rather than master a particular function. (And I would argue that IT = a function, although there's still great demand for IT people who understand how businesses run.)
