In Reply To: Of McKinsey, Bain, and BCG. My personal experience is Big 5 and that after 18 years in industry. "That is, a 23 year old consultant who spends 6 months at a client site will probably see more of the overall operations and levels of management and even some details of operations than someone working there doing a narrow focused job in the corner somewhere. " Perhaps. I might argue that a young worker in a small business would see a wider variety of assignments than either the narrow cog in a larger organization or the strategy consultant. But perhaps I would be wrong. I do know that the young Big 5 consultants I saw tended to specialize or learn nothing of any value whatsoever. Or seemed to. I have to wonder how much good being consultants did them?
Message: my experience is with strategy consulting, not IT implementation. My last project I spoke to people in manufacturing, sales, marketing, finance, logistics, and spoke to several customers. In 6 months I got a broader view of a Fortune 500 company than any other young entry level people in that company. And each project I am on covers a different topic. So after a few engagements I get a broad variety of experiences in a variety of industries. One project can be in supply chain, another on a division turnaround, a third on marketing strategy for a new product, a fourth a overall portfolio strategy. each project is different for sure. As far as small businesses are concerned what you say makes sense, my comments were directed at comparing strategy consulting to being a corporate cog. I would say consulting is a much more useful, pragmatic, learning experience by a long shot.
