I've also considered sending a sample of work that illustrates my analytic and strategic thinking skills along with my cover letter. It wouldn't be anything too long, just a brief, 6-8 page proposal for a project I'm working on right now. Do you think that's a good idea or just another burden on the person(s) who will scan my resume and cover letter? Thanks for the helpful advice! |

I don't think that sending a "6-8 page proposal" would help, and it will probably damage your chances in some places.
Because the economy is so bad, consulting firms have to go through 50-100 resumes [or more!] for every position. Therefore, (1) they don't have time to read the extra things you send, (2) because they did not request writing samples, etc., they may not want to review them for one resume only to be fair to the rest of the pack and (3) being able to sell yourself in a concise manner is an important skill.
Bottom line, I recommend sending a one page [!] resume, cover letter, and transcript. Other materials should be sent only if asked. It is fine to say writing samples, examples of work, etc. available upon request in your resume.
