I know people working for top firms with very mediocre grades (i.e. 2ii or 3rd) and I know people with first class academics who have been sent packing soon after joining a top firm.
As I said before, if you are geek with no commercial nouse you will not last long in consultancy.
And if you think personality doesn't count for much - think again. If you can't comfotably deal with clients and reassure them etc (and show that you have the ability to develop and eventually sell consultancy projects) how are you ever going to be a successful consultant.

I've seen people removed from projects because the client just didn't like them.
When your performance review comes up, you don't want the VPs to stand up and say "Yeah...my clients rolled him off because they could tell he thought they were idiots."
