It's a scam because consulting plays off of the personality traits of the consultant:
-driven
-ambitious
-highly motivated
-competitive
and uses those traits to drive them to overwork for not so much money.
It's like hamsters on a wheel chasing food they will never reach or a monkey that can't get out of a trap because it refuses to let go of the banana.

But young peoples' jobs typically aren't the best, the sexiest, etc. Yes, the 80 hour weeks suck, but as long as I'm learning more than I could in other, saner jobs, I don't think I'm the hampster on the wheel.
