What is the current scenario and the expected scenario over the next 3-5 years for strategic consulting (McK, Bain, BAH, BCG) to electric power utilities, or oil/gas companies? Enron used to be among the top clients of McK, how has the Enron fallout and energy trading fiascos affected this business? |

Consultants are little affected by success or failure of their advice. They don't even spend much time of their own trying to learn from what they advocated and whether it worked or not. The real goal (but not stated so) is to get additional studies.
As long as there are dumb clients. And utilites have plenty. And as long as there is more emphasis on corporate politcs than actually making money. (and that is the situation in big energy companies). Than there will be work for the big strat firms. And that work will not change nature radically from what was done in the past. THERE WILL NOT BE AN INCREASED EMPHAISIS ON ACTUALLY SOLVING BUSINESS PROBLEMS. RUNNING WITH THE LATEST "KNOWLEDGE" WILL BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN FIXING EXISTING PROBLEMS WITH CONVENTIONAL APPROACHES.
