With the understanding that hours will vary considerably depending upon the project one is working on, is there a way to get an idea of the hours that consulting requires in the first few years?
I'm perfectly prepared to work 9am-9pm on average. I'm just wondering if those hours are reasonable expectations (again, taking unusual circumstances into account) or are you veteran consultants chuckling to yourselves as you read those numbers? Also, are 6 day work weeks to be expected, or does the industry actually respect the concept of the weekend?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks |

Its not so much that the hours are so long..it's that you will be expected to go where they tell you, when they tell you to go. You pretty much have no say over what kind of work you do or where you do it. Generally you work a 5 day week but you can also work on weekends and holidays. Its pretty much all at the whim of your manager or managing partner.
To make it worse, in the interest of achieving a "well balanced life", the firm will create "fun" events you have to go to. As if having you spend more time at work is a balanced life.
The industry respects nothing about your personal time unless you are an eager gung-ho nerd with no life outside of work anyway.
