In Reply To: I recently graduated from a top 3 liberal arts school with honors (magna cum laude and phi beta kappa). For the second time, I applied this fall to all of the top firms and was still not even given a first round interview at all but one firm. What does it take to get in the door? It seems like I have all the credentials for first rounds: top grades, leadership experience, internships, interesting/unique experiences, etc... What gives? I don't understand what else I can do. FYI- I have a pretty decent job now, in a great firm, so I don't think that's the problem.
Message: I'm a big 4 firm. For the last year or two, we have pretty much only been hiring people with strong technical skills. I have been to recruiting events where I have talked with extremely bright people that we would have taken in a heartbeat 3-4 years ago, whose resumes we tossed. When only a very few are being hired, the companies become very selective. You can be the brightest person in the world, but if you don't have the skills they are looking for at the time, you won't get a look.
