so possibly take gmats and not even apply to mba program yet and just use those scores in place of SAT scores? |

The GMAT (and STS) are susceptable to practice
It's many years ago and I never did my MBA, but I discovered that I could raise my score from 500 in the first practice exam to 740 on the real thing after about 40 hours of work.
In buying practice materials I suggest the Princeton Review stuff for strategy. For practice exams I suggest you buy the Official stuff that the testing board itself puts out. It's closer to the real thing than the cheaper guides.
