PhD as consultants |

I will finalize my PhD in Informatics this year, with a focus on business process analysis and IT, i.e. it is rather business oriented.
During my PhD-studies, I have been associated with a consulting firm and managed a research institute start-up and now a research group. Combining research with practical work has been very beneficial for all parts, the consulting firm and its clients, the research institute and myself, even though it has taken some more years to complete the thesis.
On the other hand, if you are a "pure" IT-person, I am not sure whether a PhD will help you in your professional advancement, since PhD-studies in the Computer Science field tend to be rather theoretical. It depends, however, on the focus of your work.
