In Reply To: I would like to become a management consultant after an MBA, but am I required to have experience before becoming a consultant? I know that firms hire recent college graduates with no experience, but what are the prospects like for someone with an MBA? I am currently an analyst at an investment bank, having worked my way up from assistant (read: secretary). However, the work I perform is still primarily administrative, although at a much higher level. I function as part of an finance/operations team, not as part of a deal execution team. If experience is required before joining the consultant ranks, how do I get it? I am already working full time so freelancing isn't really an option. I am also worried about how my lack of experience will affect my chances for getting a summer associate position during business school.
Message: between your undergrad and MBA are not required. Most firms would frown on someone who went direct from u/g to MBA sans working. As long as you have a few years of decent experience/responsability, it doesn't matter if you were a product manager or a plant engineer or an analyst. The MBA gives you a decent spot to make a shift.
