In Reply To: I'm looking for advice regarding breaking into management consulting. I've attended 3 Ivies (Wharton, Columbia, Harvard), but have no business experience. Worked in the public sector for several years after college, went back to school, then applied, but was not admitted to, several top 5 econ. Ph.D. programs. I have no intention of going back for the Ph.D., and was wondering what my chances would be with respect to finding a consulting position. My most recent B-school course was 8 years ago, though have strong math background and analytical ability (780 GRE). Should I even try applying to McKinsey, BCG, etc. based on my math and analytical background alone? Would B-school courses be helpful? Thanks.
Message: What degrees do you have? Three Ivies is nice, but if it was to get one undergrad degree ... so what? Do you have an MA/MS? What was your undergrad degree? === Do you know anyone in management consulting? If so, the best way to get in without another degree would be to leverage your relationships. === On the other hand, the easiest way to get into MC, is to get a top 1-20 MBA ... the programs are as / more valuable for the fact that they are the "normal science" recruiting paths for consulting, i-banking, etc, firms, as for the actual coursework. Additional individual b-school courses are unlikely to be of much help.
