Moving from Big 5 to Boutique |

Can anyone with experience at at a boutique consulting firm tell me about the attitude toward travel, expenses, and work/life balance?
I am considering a move from Big 5 to a smaller shop. I have heard that some firms are really tight with their travel budgets, to the point of co-workers sharing rooms or even bunkbeds to cut costs while on the road. Are consultants reimbursed for their costs while on the road (personal auto miles, per diems, etc.)? Also, what kind of policies do they have about travel (work/life balance)? As the firm has fewer resources, I could forsee having to work longer hours.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
