In Reply To: Just finished my MBA last year and took a consulting job with the big-5. Ive been there about a year and its mostly bullshit. (I had also been a consultant before I went to b-school for a couple of years). Here's what I've found: The pay sucks. It may be a little higher than industry but $60k, 70k or even $100k is not that much when you live in a city like NY or San Francisco. Divide up the pay by the hours and its almost like making minimum wage. Most consultants I know don't make that much anyway. The hours suck. The firms HR people go on about work/life balance and how its so hard to maintain. No its not, moron, just let us go home at a reasonable hour! The job itself is fucking ridiculous. It's basically high-priced temp work. Any company that needs to pay 10x as much to bring in some 25yr old guy to teach educated people who have been working for 10-20 years how to do their job deserves to go out of business. I can train a monkey to make flow diagrams. The people are dorks. I hate hanging out at company functions with these people because they are SO FREAKIN DULL! Every consultant I've ever met is a nerd who thinks they know everything about everything even though they know a little about nothing. Management are pompous incompetant asses. A rigorous up or out culture where the stupidest are "councelled out" and the brightest leave in 2-5 years creates a thoroughly mediocre management. The entire culture is idiotic. Why do I have to pretend to do BS work when I'm on the beach? Just tell me you don't have any work now and call me when something is ready. And stop telling me to be "proactive". Why do I have to "proactively" remind my manager to do everything? Act like a fucking professional, not a spoiled child. And finally the travel. I love spending a fortune to live in a great city so I can travel every monday to the smallest towns in the USA. 8 Months and I'm starting to turn into a fat shit like my coworkers because we drink and eat hotel food each night there's no gym in our hotel. Yeah, I'm pretty much cutting my losses and telling consulting to go screw.
Message: Why is any of this surprising to you people? That's what you get for working for a Big5 consulting firm. It's like working for the McDonald's of consulting; therefore, you get treated like drones and the milk you for all you're worth before you catch on. Go work for a higher end firm or a boutique or stop complaning about a bad choice.
