In Reply To: I am currently a second year surgical resident and am interested in transitioning into a career in strategy consulting. Will not having an MBA hurt my chances of interviewing at a top firm (McK, Bain, BCG)? I am interested in health care consulting.
Message: Why do you want to go into strategy consulting? Many management leaders/consultants in this area have solid strategy credentials (beginning with a top flight MBA)as well as some depth into the managerial issues impacting specific industries (eg healthcare) There are certainly opportunities in Healthcare consulting, but it may help to be very focused towards a particular type of expertise and position yourself as such. Are you thinking about a clinical or managerial path - the skills & knowledge base needed are vastly different. It would probably be a good idea for you to find a (consulting) mentor to help you think through your real options here. It may be more challenging than you are prepared to expend at this point in your professional development.
