In Reply To: Badabing has it just right--the only difference I see is that over time the "Marriott" is turning into the "Courtyard by Marriott" to keep costs down and the project margins up. Basically, you can forget about doing anything significant with your personal time in the evenings that you are away from home, or the evening that you fly home. First of all, you won't have much personal time--I find I typically work 8am - 8pm, at least. And there have been many nights when I don't leave 'til 11, 12 or even 1am. Good luck working out, studying for a class, whatever. You'll be too tired. You essentially end up living about 2/7th or 3/7th of your life (depending if you are on a 5-day or 4-day a week project.
Message: Thanks to consulting industry I don't even have a job (I was one of the 35% laid off from Accidenture). I have lost some of my health and I hope to regain it since I am currently suffering medical problems that started while I was working but I was too busy to see a doctor. Now I may loose my liver thanks to all the craziness and I can barely afford the medical insurance since I no longer have a job. But, I still learned/ehanced some skills that I may have not otherwise been forced to do working in a more stable enviroment. But GBSxxx#1 so accurately describes what you lose. I sacrificed so much of my personal time and health for a job that laid me off once the market turned down even though I recieved recognition from the client for my quality IT work. I would advise anyone considering consulting to wiegh all the options and maybe reflect on what is really important in your life.
