In Reply To: As I was observing the posts on this board, it seemed that almost everyone was speaking to only several areas of consulting. By definition, consulting is outsourced help for whatever area a company needs assistance. Most companies seems to typically need IT and possibly HR and Accounting functions only a few times in a year (if that) so that is why there are so many of these types of jobs available. Most of you on this string seem to deal with "process-oriented" consulting, which is VERY boring, and supposedly the Big-5 are good at this, sometimes simply because of their immense size. Areas such as strategy consulting are not at all like people are talking about on this board. There are plenty of examples of McKinsey consultants who went directly into industry at the top positions (even CEO). And I don't believe you'll find any of these consultants complaining of boredom. So if at all possible, watch out for "process-oriented" consulting (unless that's your 'thing') and stick with the more interesting areas.
Message: Miguel_y, As a professional who will be starting a full-time MBA program in the fall with eyes on the Strategy Consulting field therafter, your post arouses a lot of interest to me. Could you point to some resources: books, websites, etc. which would paint a clearer picture of the Strategy Consulting field and the opportunities there? Many Thanks!
