I just want to thank all of you who so generously responded to my concerns.
This is where I'm going to go from here:
1. Contact the recruiting departments of the Top 5 (by email) and ask them directly if the "work/life" balance they advertise is really in keeping with my situational needs.
2. If not... then I'll try to talk to someone at one of the smaller firms (there is one in my area that I'm really interested in), on an informational basis, to find out the lifestyle associated with working at a smaller firm.
3. If those two options are consequently eliminated, I'll have to direct my attention away from the management consulting industry and towards a different goal of starting out as an assistant to a project manager/account executive at a different type of company. My goal is still to someday be a "strategic manager". It may just become necessary that I work my way up to that level within a different type of company: marketing, corporate real estate, etc.
All of your advice has been instrumental in helping me guide my next steps. Thanks again,
