Work/Life Balance and Consulting Hours |

I very much want to attempt to secure a position as a junior researcher/analyst after graduation, for many reasons. However, there is one caveat: I know that I am not willing to devote more than 55 hours per week to work at this stage of my life (I have a four-year old son).
I know that consulting can require up to 70 or more hours per week; 55 is really the maximum level for me.
My question is this: All the Top 5 websites stress "work/life" balance. Is this just a facade to attract recruits, or can I realistically expect to put in 50 hours per week as a first year?
If the answer is that 50-55 hours is an unrealistic goal, than sadly (I really loved the idea of working in consulting), I'll need to go into something else. What other job options even come close to offering a similar work environment?
(By the way, I am committed to staying based out of upstate NY, so jobs in DC, NYC, etc are out of the question).
I look forward to any suggestions any of you may have.
Thank you,
Kristina
